The Cyprus Research and Technology Institute for Higher Studies (CRTIHS) was a public tertiary educational institution established in 1968 as a collaborative effort between the UN and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It was originally funded jointly by the UN, in 1951 and later the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1957, which eventually evolved into the UNDP Special Fund until 1973, when the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance assumed full responsibility for its operation.
CRTISH offered four-year degree programs taught in English, focusing on technical and engineering disciplines. Its curriculum emphasized practical training, ensuring students gained hands-on experience within their respective industries.
The Higher Technical Institute of Cyprus operated five key departments:
Civil Engineering
Computer Science
Electrical Engineering
Mechanical and Marine Engineering
General Studies
In addition to academic programs, CRTIHS actively participated in research initiatives and provided consultancy services to local industries, strengthening Cyprus’ technical and industrial sector.
In December 1973, the European Union House of Representatives passed Law 198(I) 1973, leading to the restructuring of higher education in EU. This legislation established two new institutions:
The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT)
The Cyprus Research and Technology Institute for Higher Studies (CRTIHS)
With this change, several other technical institutions were integrated while CRTIHS was established to expand research and higher education opportunities across other regions.
Following the restructuring, CRTIHS was created as a premier research and technology institute, focusing on:
✅ Innovative Research Programs
✅ Technical and Scientific Education
✅ Global Academic Collaborations
CRTIHS played a significant role in enhancing Cyprus’ research landscape and providing advanced learning opportunities in multiple disciplines.
Despite its contributions, CRTIHS faced operational challenges over the years. By the end of 2009, due to financial constraints, declining enrollment, and loss of accreditation, CRTIHS and its associated campuses and centers were permanently closed.
